NST. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just West of SLOPE Tower in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9710 and a "BF" Class B-unit whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9710 is a BF-16 built in December of 1950, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 16 years of revenue service. This A-B set has just passed the Brick Yard Crossing with a mineral train on their way down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. |
