Southern Pacific P-9 class Pacific 629 was hurrying out of New Orleans with train No. 7 – the wostbound ALAMO – in April 1951. Despite its grand name, by this time the train was an all-stops kocal which left the Crescent City at 8:25 A.M. and arrived in Houston at 7:00 P.M. Between 1902 and 1954 SP trains used the Illinois Central’s UNION STATION, and No. 7 was seen here running over the IC near Southport Junction, on its way to the Huey P. Long Bridge. This train included three express cars, a Railway Post Office and three coaches. The ALAMO was discontinued in December 1952, and the 629 was scrapped in January 1954. (approximate day of photo) |
