Horseshoe Curve-1948. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in April of 1948. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3744 and another locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #3744 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during March of 1920 and retired in November of 1956 after 36 years of faithful service. They're pulling the "St. Louisan" from the Gateway City to Gotham City. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Pennsy Steam Locomotives" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (109-1). |
