Massive and powerful are the two adjectives for this 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomtoive built by Baldwin in 1944 as BO #7601 (serial #70063). The impressive loco sereved quite successfully until dieselization hit the roster. Even then, they were occasionally pulled back into action, even to head up a few passenger trains! What a sight that would have been! The loco was renumbered in 1956 to BO 651 and dropped from the roster in 1960. No photographer was listed for this photo. |

This massive brute, B&O 2-8-8-4 #7602, was one of the last articulated steam locomotives built in the US. Although B&O wanted diesels in 1944 but were forced by the war effort to order only steam, this massive locomotive served a desparate need for power to move coal in the West Virginia area. Built by Baldwin in 1944, the last of this class was retired in 1960. Specs - EM-1 class). 64" drivers, an impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, 24"x32" cylinders, engine weight of 628,700 lb and impressive tractive effort of 115,000 lb. Although not wanted by the B&O at first (diesels were their first choice), the War Production Board restricted them to ordering steam locomotives instead. Built by Baldwin in 1944, B&O 2-8-8-4 #7603 filled the need for power quite well.
