CEFX 6020 (former SOO) and PRLX 205 (former ATSF) |
| Description: |
A haggard Warbonnet leads an odd and interesting pair of leased locomotives pulling a CN through freight as it approached the former N. Union St. grade crossing as it headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 19 Sep. '18. I don't see SOO rolling through often enough these days, even though the C&NW/SOO junction is only about 2 miles out-of-frame to the left. In the background are Union Square Apartments, 500 E. Winnebago St., Appleton, WI. They were erected in '15 on the site of the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex, between E. Winnebago St., N. Union St., E. Commercial St., and behind a row of houses on N. Drew St. Eagle Manufacturing Co., makers of gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements, was incorporated in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI in Dec. 1888. When they outgrew that facility, they began construction of their factory here in 1904. Over the years it grew until it occupied most of the block. Before its expansion, it shared the block with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Co. to the east. Further east of that was C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers, fronting N. Union St. between E. Winnebago St. and E. Commercial St. All 3 facilities were served by C&NW. There was a diamond in the middle of the east end of E. Winnebago St., just west of N. Union St., near the small clump of trees on the right, for at least two spurs leading into that block. I feel that the uniqueness of the lashup overrides the sub-standard focus of the photograph (I wish it had been a sunnier day). |

Once a princess, now a hard working old girl, this former Santa Fe Warbonnet SD 75I is now part of the PRLX lease fleet. A number of these units have turned up on KCS lately, mostly in bulk commodity service. I remember when these were the queens of the high iron, rolling big fast trains across the Transcon. Hard to believe that was over 20 years ago. Theyre still on the main, just not making the 70 MPH they used to, a testament to the longevity of EMDs engineering. This was on a northbound at CP Flint Creek, just picked up from its duty as a DPU on an AEPX coal train, now in the plant. |

Train had two locomotives, CN 2598 and PRLX 211 (former BNSF, former ATSF). I don’t get to see Warbonnets very often. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 loom in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. I am curious to learn where the two new turnouts (stacked in pieces between the tracks) will be installed. The former SOO main line is in the foreground. |
