Here is page one of a 16-page article by Mark Smith & Michelle Giroux entitled "Where 14,000 Labored." It was published originally in the July-August 1987 issue of "Locomotive & Railway Preservation" magazine, page 13. Photo Caption: "South Amboy, New Jersey, September 1955." Photo by Don Wood. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956 after amassing over 2,469,000 revenue miles, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 8 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, withdrawn from service and disassembled because of safety concerns, and is now being restored again for further excursion service. Wave to the Engineman!

Ely, Altoona's Superintendent of Motive Power, the 'Department of Chemical & Physical Tests' (later to be known simply as the Altoona Testing Lab) quickly attained an influential decision-making position over the quality and longevity of materials, rolling stock, and chemicals used by the PRR and other railroads and suppliers as well."

Top Photo: Shown here are Pennsylvania Railroad Shopmen crossing Altoona's 12th Street Footbridge after a hard day's work in the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. Note the PRR passenger train under the Bridge. Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "The Altoona Machine Shops . . . circa 1895. Once home of three roundhouses (for the Pittsburgh, Western, and Middle Divisions), the complex until 1889 housed PRR's major repair and locomotive construction facilities, including a blacksmith shop, wheel shop, foundries, machine shop, and erecting hall." Partially visible at the far left is the 17th Street Engine Ladder. In those days, both freight and passenger trains changed engines in Altoona; this facility provided westbound replacements.
