Album Info:Here is a seven-page article by Mr. Tom Hanna entitled "Altoona Works." It was published originally in the January 1946 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 20-26. All of the photos were first published in the Pennsylvania Railroad's in-house organ, "Mutual" magazine. This article provides an excellent overview of "the main Pennsylvania Railroad repair and building center, which comprises the largest and most extensive group of railroad shops in existence." * Repaired Album *

Description:  Here is page one of a seven-page article by Tom Hanna entitled "Altoona Works." It was published originally in the January 1946 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 20. Photo Caption: "One of the Class T-1 fast passenger locomotives on the locomotive test plant ready to start a test. A locomotive can run 100 miles an hour or more while standing still where test readings can be more accurately obtained." Pictured here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6110, a T-1 (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during April of 1942 and retired in December of 1953 after just 11 years of revenue service. This is the original T-1.

The top photo is an aerial view of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Passenger Car Shops clustered around the 4th Street Footbridge. The bottom photo is an aerial view of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops complex sandwiched between the 17th Street Bridge at the lower left and the 9th Street Footbridge at the upper right. The Passenger Station is located across the mainline tracks, adjacent to the 12th Street Footbridge.

Description:  Here is page seven of a seven-page article by Tom Hanna entitled "Altoona Works." It was published originally in the January 1946 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 26. Photo Caption: "Freight cars are put together on a regular assembly line. Here is the beginning. The main frame for a gondola car has been put together upon a fixture, made up of long steel girders fitted with stops against which the various parts of the frame are located. When finished it is hoisted off the fixture, put on trucks, and started down the line." The names of these 12th Street Car Shopmen are not recorded.
