I witnessed the unloading process on another train and the power will stay coupled to the train as it is pulled through the rotary unloader by the power plant's mechanical arms. I was surprised to find out the rotary was operated by a plant employee, not a railroad employee. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to inspect the condition of each piece of rolling stock as it turned upside down. |

This is a loaded unit coal train decending a 1 percent grade into Cotter Yard, about a half mile beyond this point, where the crew will change. Unfortunately the MP ordered their SD50's without dynamic brakes, so it will require air brakes to control this train into the yard. The MP was a power braking road, meaning the locomotives kept pulling even when the brakes were applied in order to keep the train stretched. Of course the engine brakes were bailed off. The purpose was to keep from breaking coupler knuckles. |

I'm not sure of the details, but this train arrived two days earlier and parked in Cotter. Not wishing to walk a mile to get to the Cotter depot, the head-end crew cut off their train and ran around it, parking the power next to the caboose. |
